Answer: Laws meant to punish drunk driving in Wisconsin have consistently gotten more severe. DUIs or OWIs and increasing penalties is popular politically with politicians and in government. These laws are just going to get harsher. I always talk about the fact that the real people benefitting by increasing these penalties are attorneys like me, well-known for defending these drivers. Tougher penalties don’t lessen recidivism rates. Treatment is the only thing that’s really been shown to help recidivism rates.
